GRNSW Grading Forum
Greyhound Racing NSW General Manager of Racing & Integrity, Bill Fanning, will conduct an open forum at Wagga Greyhound Club on Sunday 12 June 2011 as part of GRNSW’s commitment under its Strategic Plan to regularly review the operation of grading policies throughout the State.

GRNSW aims to pursue continuous improvements in grading to ensure consistency and confidence for participants and the wagering public. The forum will be aimed at both the TAB and Non TAB grading Policies, available on GRNSW’s web site www.thedogs.com.au under the Integrity heading.

The forum will include, but not be limited to, discussion on such aspects as the grading point score system, order of entry, guarding and drop back provisions.

All interested parties are welcome to attend the forum, which commences at 1.30 pm in the bar area at the Wagga Greyhound Track. Any person wishing to raise a topic of interest or concern can do so prior to Sunday by emailing Bill at GRNSW on bfanning@grnsw.com.au

Further such forums will be conducted throughout the state as part of this important initiative.

Greyhound Buyers: Internet Scam Alert
Greyhound Racing NSW(GRNSW) would like to alert potential purchasers to alleged fraudulent activity concerning not only people purporting to be selling greyhounds, but also indicating the fraudulent activity of advertising the sale of other dogs which do not exist. Such schemes have primarily involved sales over the internet or greyhound forums.
 
GRNSW has been made aware of at least one instance in which greyhound pups have been advertised for sale and checks by our Member Services Department revealed no such mating registered. Anyone contemplating the purchase of any greyhound is welcome to contact our Member Services Department in working hours to confirm the validity of advertised pups.

Warning on Prohibited Substances
Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) Stewards have become increasingly concerned with a number of recent reports from the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory of the presence of prohibited substances in greyhound samples which have resulted from an apparent inadvertent or negligent administration to the greyhound of medication designed for use exclusively in humans.
 
These have included anti-inflammatory preparations and also substances used for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) and associated heart conditions, and all such substances have the potential to affect a greyhound’s performance.
 
Aside from the deliberate administration of these substances, residue left on the hands or spilling from a container can lead to a positive result and participants are strongly urged to avoid such administration by carefully washing hands prior to preparation of greyhound’s food. This becomes increasingly important in the days leading up to a race.
 
Participants are also urged to avoid the use of unregistered products and to exercise care when applying substances topically (rubbed into the skin), once again when applied close to a race.
 
A report of the presence of any such substances in a sample can lead to severe penalties being imposed and participants cannot be expected to exculpate themselves by admission of an inadvertent administration.

Product Warning: Guaiphenesin
Greyhound Racing NSW alerts participants about the prolonged excretion time of the prohibited substance, Guaiphenesin, found in the registered pharmaceutical medication, Robitussin.
 
There is no known withdrawal period for this product and the detection of Guaiphenesin in a race day sample from a greyhound would constitute a breach of the rules.
 
Trainers should avoid the administration of Robitussin in the week prior to racing.

Inspection of Greyhounds After Naming
With the recent addition of Performance Trials Greyhound Racing NSW has made some amendments to the Inspection Times for the issuing of Weight Cards of Named Greyhounds prior to nominating for their first race start. 
 
In addition to these times all greyhounds nominated to compete in a Performance Trial may have their Weight Card issued at the same meeting provided that they arrive on course no later than 30 mins prior to the opening time for Kennelling.

Substance Alert: Pholcodine
Greyhound Racing NSW today issued a warning regarding the detection of the prohibited substance Pholcodine in race day samples. Pholcodine is commonly found in the pharmacy medicine Duro-Tuss Cough Liquid Expectorant.
 
Pholcodine is regarded as a prohibited substance under the Rules of Greyhound Racing and its detection in a sample would constitute an offence under Greyhound Australasia Rule 83.
 
Trainers should be mindful of the administration of any pharmaceutical medicines close to race day.

Warning: Use Of Hydrocortisone Sodium Succinate
Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) alerts participants as from 1 November 2009, a new testing method will be introduced by Australian Racing Laboratories which will allow the direct detection of hydrocortisone hemisuccinate (arising from the use of hydrocortisone sodium succinate) in blood and urine samples.
 
This method does not require quantitative measurement under the Rules of Greyhound Racing.
 
Although no controlled administration trials have been conducted on greyhounds, the method detects recent use of the human prescription medicine Solu-Cortef, whose active ingredient is hydrocortisone sodium succinate, which should not be used close to racing.
 
Industry participants are therefore advised to avoid the use of hydrocortisone sodium succinate close to race day as the detection of this substance in a sample taken from a greyhound would constitute a breach of the Rules of Greyhound Racing.

Substance Alert: FIROCOXIB
Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) today issued a warning to members of the sport about the prolonged excretion time of the prohibited substance Firocoxib, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) commonly found in the registered veterinary product PREVICOX.
 
As a NSAID, Firocoxib is screened for in samples taken from greyhounds and the detection of this substance in a sample would constitute an offence under Greyhound Australasia Rule 83.
 
There is no known data supporting the withholding period of any preparation containing FIROCOXIB.
