GRNSW WELCOMES NEW PARLIAMENTARY FRIENDS OF GREYHOUND RACING
Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) Chief Executive Officer Mr Tony Mestrov today welcomed the formation of the Parliamentary Friends of Greyhound Racing group at NSW Parliament.
The Parliamentary Friends of Greyhound Racing group held its inaugural meeting in Parliament House on Tuesday where bipartisan support came from 28 founding members.
Member for Wollondilly, the Hon Nathaniel Smith, and the Member for Fairfield, the Hon Guy Zangari, were elected Co-Chairs of the group, while the Hon Roy Butler, Member for Barwon, was elected Secretary.
“I think this is a strong indication of how far the industry has come in such a short period of time and I welcome the formation of this supportive group through a bipartisan approach that benefits the greyhound industry – from racing to rehoming – across NSW,” Mr Mestrov said.
“I am particularly keen to promote ways in which Government can look to work with the industry as an active and supportive participant, and for the advocacy of community groups and local businesses that are supported by the greyhound racing industry.”
The aim of the group - which consists of MPs from the Liberal Party, the National Party, the Labor Party, the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party, and the Christian Democrat Party - is to promote greyhound racing throughout NSW as an entertaining, transparent and sustainable industry, and to promote Greyhound Racing NSW as the major industry body and welfare provider for greyhounds throughout the State.
“Today’s formation of a greyhound racing friendship group is recognition that the industry has successfully reformed itself over the past five years with an added focus on the welfare of the dogs that give us so much joy,” the Member for Wollondilly, Hon Nathaniel Smith, said.
“This is much to the credit of Greyhound Racing NSW under the leadership of CEO Tony Mestrov and his team.
“The meeting was one of the most strongly attended inaugural meetings in many years and parliamentarians from a broad spectrum of parties were in attendance.
“I am humbled to have been elected Co-Chair, together with my Labor colleague, Guy Zangari, and look forward to strengthening ties between parliamentarians, government and the industry well into the future.”
The Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation, the Hon Kevin Anderson said the formation of the Parliamentary Friends of Greyhound Racing group displays a newfound confidence in the industry.
“This is a wonderful initiative which I thoroughly support,” the Minister said. “It again shows the amazing transformation of greyhound racing in NSW over recent years, into a responsible industry, and clearly indicates there is a resurgence of confidence in greyhound racing here in NSW.”
