Valetta McDonald, an icon of greyhound racing on the NSW South Coast has passed away aged 91.
Valetta had a nearly 60-year involvement in the sport along with her late husband Tony. The McDonald family is a greyhound racing family through and through. Tony’s brother, the late President of the Cowra Greyhound Racing Club, Peter McDonald and his sons Rod and Wes have had significant success as trainers. Valetta and Tony’s children, Lorraine Currey and John McDonald have also had a long involvement with the industry.
It’s fitting that the heats of the Dapto Megastar are set to be run and won this Thursday night. “I love the Megastar,” said Valetta’s daughter Lorraine, who played a role in the Megastar coming to fruition.
Over the years, Valetta trained many winners throughout her long involvement in the sport and was synonymous with the Westburn prefix. On the 19th July, a few weeks after her 91st birthday, she saluted at Goulburn with Cedar Spot.
GRNSW wishes to extend its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Valetta McDonald on their loss.
