Max Maher, the renowned greyhound chiropractor and trainer of 1970s Harold Park flying machine Wicked Wilson, has died, aged 90.

Maher, who was based at Catherine Field, gained fame working alongside legendary veterinarian, the late Ron Bowen, at his Crossorads surgery near Liverpool.

Neville Brown, trainer of the 2010 group one Peter Mosman Classic winner Tuiaki and 2022 Nowra Puppy Classic winner My Mate Kate, paid tribute to Maher, saying: "I was just 14 when I first met him and when there was anything I needed to know about greyhounds I talked to Max.

"He guided me through my early years as a trainer and taught me plenty about injuries and how to treat them.''

Current leading trainer Jason Magri also heaped praise on Maher.

"When I started training greyhounds I got a lot of valuable advice from Max,'' Magri said.

"He was a genius, especially at being able to repair hip injuries in dogs.''

Ron Alcock, who trained the 1990 NSW Greyhound of the Year Classy Spider, also lavished praise on Max Maher's skill.

"I went to him for 40 years and if I ever had a dog going bad Max was almost certain to fix it up,'' Alcock said.

"At one stage Classy Spider won 14 races in a row at Wentworth Park and Max checked her over and kept her sound the whole time.''

GRNSW wishes to extend its condolences to the family and many friends of the late Max Maher.
