Dubbo trainer Charmaine Roberts has won several trebles at Wentworth Park, but none more satisfying than Saturday night's triumph culminating in Sooty Keeping's all-the-way win in the NSW National Sprint Championship Prelude.
Taormina was odds-on to notch her eighth straight Wentworth Park win, but Sooty Keeping exploded from box five while the hot favourite dwelt at box rise and was unplaced.
Sooty Keeping rocketed over the 520m in 29.56, a remarkable time on the rain-soaked track, taking the Group One Flying Amy Classic winner's earnings to more than $345,000.
Roberts had taken out the first two Wentworth Park races on Saturday night with litter sisters Heidi Keeping and Nola Keeping, who won fifth grades in 30.08 and 30.04 respectively.
After Roberts' trio of wins, her partner Shayne Stiff said: "A lot of credit for our success tonight and every night goes to our strapper Fiona Cole, who often leads our greyhounds to the boxes.
"Sooty Keeping is just a wonderful hard-chasing greyhound and she has now won 23 from 41 starts.
"Meanwhile, Heidi Keeping will now be set for the Richmond Puppy Auction Classic."
"When she was a youngster, we put her into the Puppy Auction but bought her back, and we have paid up for her to contest the Richmond series.
"Heidi Keeping raced very wide when she finished fifth at her first Wentworth Park on July 31, so we brought her back to Wenty and gave her a box-to-box trial on Monday night, and she handled the track better.
"Tonight she got off the track a bit but has improved with each look at Wentworth Park, although there is still nothing between her and her sister Nola Keeping in ability.''
Owner-breeder Frank Gatt secured Ritza Duane in a puppy swap deal, but in doing so, missed the opportunity to own crack sprinter Taormina, his dog's litter sister.
On Saturday night, Ritza Duane scored his eighth Wentworth Park win when he came from second early to beat Zipping Hasler by a length in a slick 29.77, second fastest time of the night.
After the race, Ritza Duane's trainer, Mark Gatt, Frank's son, said: "The deal was that Dad was to receive three pups from the litter Ritza Millie whelped to Fernando Bale in January, 2023.
"One of the pups he chose was the brindle dog, which races as Ritza Duane, but he knocked back the chance to select a brindle bitch, who is a dead ringer for her brother, and she races as Taormina.''
Ashby Flash clocked a near record 29.39 winning over 520m at Nowra in mid-January and finally reproduced that form at Wentworth Park for trainer Allan Manwaring on Saturday night.
Ashby Flash was up against a strong field in a 520m fourth grade but led all the way to win by a length in 29.81, running home in a powerful 11.79.
Strong finishers Taw Commander and the hot favourite Make Them Cry sat behind Ashby Flash on the back straight but Manwaring's dog went to the line full of running to clock smart time on a wet track.
After the race Allan Manwaring said: "Ashby Flash won at Nowra in 29.39 in January but he has had me tearing my hair out because he did not go like that again for the next six months.
"Once he was a clear leader on the back straight tonight I didn't care what was chasing him tonight because Ashby Flash is capable of running 600m so I knew he would not get run down.''
Taw Major was desperately unlucky when unplaced in a 520m fifth grade on Saturday night but his litter sister and kennelmate Best Surprise gave trainer Andrew Rowe a consolation by running down another litter sister She's Infinite to give the kennel a quinella result in the Ladbrokes Bet Ticker fifth grade final.
The more talented Taw Major had been disputing the first turn lead when he was skittled by a wide runner in an earlier race so Rowe's first and second placings 40 minutes later was a worthy reward.
