Chase Fever Hits Wenty

Paw Oswald defeated Jungle Johnny in the group one National Derby at Wentworth Park in January, and the Victorian-trained dog is ready to reproduce that form there on Saturday night.

Paw Oswald has box one in the top grade 520m Mark Hughes Foundation Stakes and trainer Mark Delbridge said: "He is going as well as ever."

"Paw Oswald has booked his spot in the Million Dollar Chase semi-finals through his win in the Broken Hill Regional Final on September 14.

"He is the only greyhound to have broken 30sec for the 525m trip there and he has done it three times!''

Kennelmate Paw Qwan, who collided at the first turn with Paw Oswald before being runner-up to that dog in the Broken Hill final, has also qualified for the Million Dollar Chase semis.

He looks hard to beat in Saturday night's The Lids Fly on Ladbrokes Live Channels Stakes, a 520m fifth grade although Mark Delbridge said: "I would have preferred Paw Qwan drawn closer to the fence but he is racing well.''

Surprise package for Delbridge could be Spring Miles, who has filled just five minor placings in 13 Wentworth Park appearances but who has box three in the sixth MDC Qualifier, 520m.

Spring Miles will be having his first Wentworth Park start for Delbridge who said: "We paid good money for this dog but it has been well worth it.

"He is going super, just flying at the moment and he has worked his way into free-for-all class at both Sandown and The Meadows.''

Spring Miles' task will be made easier by the impending scratching of the Ken Bailey-trained Select Kyron, who has box two.

"He hurt himself in a trial at Wenty early this week,'' Ken Bailey said.

"But I have a good chance of having a starter in the Million Dollar Chase semis because My Boy Bingo, who has box five in the seventh MDC Qualifier, trialled well at Wentworth Park this week."

"I gave him a box-to-box hit-out and although he lost the first turn slightly, his splits were encouraging as he clocked 5.43, 13.80 and 17.96.''

Wyong Dallas, who won  seven races in succession before finishing fifth in the MDC Regional Final at Goulburn on September 26, will go into Saturday's third City Qualifier without having seen Wentworth Park.

Trainer Tom Dailly said: "I had been hoping Wyong Dallas would earn a spot in the MDC semis by filling a place at Goulburn but that didn't happen so Saturday night will be his trial at Wenty.''

Deadly Avenger has won three of his four appearances from box one and should enhance that tally when he wears the red rug for new trainer Darryl Thomas in Saturday's fourth MDC City Qualifier.

Deadly Avenger, who has earned over $579,000 is chasing his 18th win in 40 starts.

His bid to go through to the MDC semi-finals was thwarted when he was a desperately unlucky fourth, from box eight, in the Bidgee Cup at Wagga on August 22.

But Deadly Avenger looks to have drawn the easiest of Saturday's eight MDC City qualifiers, with Cumbria Benny, a litter brother and kennelmate of new joint Wentworth Park 520m record holder Cumbria Jack, appearing his only serious threat.

Like Deadly Avenger, Cumbria Benny seems ideally drawn as he has won three of his four assignments from box eight and will wear the pink rug on Saturday night.

Arguably the strongest of the MDC City Qualifiers is the fifth, with Midnight Queen and Robert Keeping ideally drawn in boxes one and eight and up-and-coming star Tribeca in box six and prolific winner Lakeview Emily in three.

Tribeca's connections were hoping for an inside box so their dog will need to jump cleanly if he is to cross to the rails.

Lakeview Emily, who has won over $646,000 and is chasing her 30th win, has vast Wentworth Park experience.

Robert Keeping has won each of his past three Wentworth Park outings from box eight, clocking a blistering 29.38, 29.75 and 29.66 and Midnight Queen had no luck when second, from box seven, at her only Wentworth Park start on September 13.

At her sole subsequent outing she led all the way, railing well from box two and clocking fastest time of the night of 29.55 over 520m at Ladbrokes Q2 Parklands on September 22.
