When Claude Dacey and his family started trialling their Sennachie-Nikki Nettle litter late in 2023, they despaired at how slow they were.

"They could not break 26 seconds for 431 metres at Ipswich, and none could better 14 seconds for the first section," admitted Claude.

Those time standards are moderate and Claude said he felt the litter was the slowest he had for years.

Fast forward to this coming Friday night and the now litter standout, Daysea's Rory, runs in the final of the Ladbrokes Million Dollar Chase.

The seven members of the litter have now won 102 races and earned $851,000.

"They were all running around the same time in those early trials at Ipswich," said Claude.

"We had no choice but to keep going with them."

And all seven of them have repaid that faith.

Daysea's Rory, winner of 24 races and $457,000, has drawn box six in the Million Dollar Chase final. He has already been third to Explicit in Victoria's million dollar version, the Group 1 The Phoenix.

But, littermates Daysea's Chief (17 wins, $124,000) and Daysea's Kurt (19 wins, $100,000) are other standouts.

"Chief and Rory were always my favourites from the litter," said Claude who handed over training of Rory last year to Tom Tzouvelis.

No, Claude and wife Norma will not be at Wentworth Park on Friday night for the Million Dollar Chase, leaving the family's representation to son Robbie.

"Robbie likes the glory," joked Claude.

Of his dog's chances, Claude knows Rory only has to "come out to be a chance".

The fact he is again running for a million dollar pay day means much to Claude and Norma Dacey.

It is a far cry to 40 years ago when they left the comfort of their Coorparoo home in Brisbane to join Claude's father Con on his greyhound property at Gilberton, near Beenleigh.

"Norma did not want to go, now we both love where we live," said Claude.

"But, in those early days we went broke. We had 100 dogs on the place at one time and for three years I don't think we won a race."

Claude was quick to take advice and things started to change.

"Ernie Hill (he trained Queensland greyhound of the year Glanzend) lived across the road and I learnt so much from him," he said.

His sweep into his current successful damline came through Jimmy Robinson.

"Jimmy had the bitch Kath's Problem," said Claude. "Jimmy needed a place to stay for a little while and we let him move into a granny flat we have on our property.

"He stayed 11 years."

Kath's Problem, who Jimmy brought with him, was given to Claude to breed with. She is the third mother of Daysea's Rory.

"I put Kath's Problem to Cosmic Rumble after discussing breeding with her with Steve Kavanagh," said Claude of the man who put Brother Fox on the map.

"Every time I breed a litter I discuss it with Steve."

That will happen with the bitches Claude has from Nikki Nettle.

He admits he chose Sennachie as the mate for Nikki Nettle that produced his Million Dollar Chase finalist after tossing up between him and Aston Rupee.

"I'd seen Sennachie race at Albion Park and knew how good he was watching him myself."

Claude, 90, knows only too well how tough it will be to win the Million Dollar Chase.

"We won't get carried away about it," he said.

"And, Norma and I are happy to watch it from our lounge room.

"He's such a good chaser, but every final he's been in lately he has drawn the six. I hoped when he went to Tom's kennel that might change, but no."
