Big Questions Ahead Of Biggest Race

Wentworth Park will host the 2025 Ladbrokes Million Dollar Chase final this Friday night.

Here’s a runner-by-runner guide ahead of the eighth edition of the MDC:

Foreign Capital | Vic Sultana
Track and Distance:
17: 6-5-1
Box 1 Record: 5: 3-2-0
Average 1st Section: 5.53

Flying very much under the radar considering he’s never missed the top two in five starts from Box 1, has a track and trip PB of 29.37, and owns a great record at Wenty Park.

On the other side of the coin, his semi-final win was the slowest of the eight (29.90) and he’s only won a total of two races in 2025.

Would be a nice story for the kennel after Vic Sultana trained Sky Wave to a podium finish in the inaugural MDC decider back in 2018.

Biggest question – can he recapture the form of a year ago when he was the fastest qualifier for the G1 Vic Peters Classic final?

Eriza Sparkles | Steve Fitch
Track and Distance:
5: 3-0-1
Box 2 Record: 2: 2-0-0
Average 1st Section: 5.43

Deserves favouritism off the back of a stellar semi-final win in a BON time of 29.17. That was a new low mark for the daughter of Tommy Shelby x Gramercy Park and she continues to impress early with a scorching 5.36 first section.

She’s had a meteoric rise since bursting onto the scene in the Peter Mosman Opal heats in June and has since won the Ladbrokes Dapto Megastar final and become the fastest race bitch in Wenty Park history.

Interestingly, Box 2 has never missed a spot on the podium in seven MDC finals and Eriza Sparkles looked well placed to continue that trend.

Biggest question – she’s the baby of the field with only 14 starts so is she ready to win a Million Dollar Chase?

My Boy Bingo | Ken Bailey
Track and Distance:
2: 2-0-0
Box 3 Record: 2: 1-0-0
Average 1st Section: 5.43

The biggest boilover on semi-final night came when My Boy Bingo held off National Sprint Champion Cumbria Jack to advance to the million-dollar decider.

The Victorian improved several lengths on his 29.80 city qualifier win a week early, stopping the clock in an impressive 29.33 off the back of a slick 5.40 run to the mark.

Any greyhound that can fend off arguably the best dog in the country in Cumbria Jack deserves a place in the final and this run of form is eerily similar to that of 2024 winner, Blue Kermaro.

Biggest question – will he be the meat in the Eriza Sparkles and Canya Sapphire sandwich in the run to the first turn?

Canya Sapphire | Jason Magri
Track and Distance Record:
11:4-5-0
Box 4 Record: 1: 1-0-0
Average 1st Section: 5.41

Jason Magri has been so close but so far in so many big finals over the last 12-months.

In Canya Sapphire, he has one of the best and most reliable beginners in the country. She’s earned a cheque in her last five starts and is already a Peter Mosman Opal, Nowra Puppy Classic and New Sensation finalist this year.

She has the best first section PB in the race (5.34) and she’ll probably need to reproduce an effort like that to find the front in this contest.

The kennel ran second with Zipping Megatron in last year’s race…can they go one better in 2025?

Biggest question – will her PB of 29.47 be good enough to win a MDC grand final?

Power And Glory |  Ken Burnett
Track and Distance Record:
16: 10-3-2
Box 5 Record: 8: 3-2-1
Average 1st Section: 5.49

The reigning Ladbrokes Golden Easter Egg champion has only missed a place once in 16 starts at track and trip.

Was a dominate 29.22 winner in his semi-final by three lengths and is now fifth up after four-months away from the track with injury.

Isn’t known for his early pace (5.51 and 5.50 are his last two first section times at Wenty) but with so much speed underneath him, could he get a perfect cart into the contest?

Got out in 5.42 in the Egg final back in April and a repeat of that effort would have the oldest dog in the race in a prime spot going into the bend.

Biggest question – No dog has ever won the race from Box 5 and does the speed underneath help or hinder him?

Daysea’s Rory | Tom Tzouvelis
Track and Distance Record:
4: 2-1-0
Box 6 Record: 12: 4-1-0
Average 1st Section: 5.55

He’s a ripper this bloke and outside a fall in the Townsville Cup final, he’s won his last four starts.

Came through the Grafton MDC regional series and has had the benefit of a few more runs at Wentworth Park than most interstaters.

His win last week was massive (29.53) considering he was three and four wide throughout the race and he seems to have an unrelenting will to win.

He’s already a Phoenix placegetter, a multiple G1 finalist and a dual G3 winner with nearly $500,000 in career earnings so he’s more than capable of becoming an MDC champion.

Biggest question – what impact will the trips down from QLD have on him after a long year of racing?

Smooth Plane | Thomas Dailly
Track and Distance Record:
7: 3-0-1
Box 7 Record: 13: 7-3-1
Average 1st Section: 5.55

One of the star performers in the field and has the most experience with 86 race starts for 28 wins and 26 placings.

Wasn’t out of form before arriving in Sydney but certainly bounced back into the winners circle in style in the city qualifiers (29.59) before a tough victory over Paw Oswald in the semi-finals (29.65).

He’s been in 14 feature finals across his career, run second in three Group 1 events, and raced recently against the like of Cumbria Jack, Gold Force, Explicit and Hotel Whisky One.

He’s oozes class and even though the box draw looks tricky, he has dominant record in the black rug.

Biggest question – can the Dailly kennel win one of the only big races to elude them?

Zipping Ariel | Courtney Barnes
Track and Distance Record:
18: 6-3-3
Box 8 Record: 3: 0-1-0
Average 1st Section: 5.57

Courtney Barnes hasn’t stopped smiling since advancing to the biggest race of her life time but Zipping Ariel should find this race tough from the outside draw.

She was a bit of a surprise semi-final winner last week in one of the weaker preliminaries and the time of 29.44 was around 2.5 lengths quicker than her previous best.

She gets a visitors draw in Box 8 and although she should go straight, I can’t see a way she gets an economical run at any stage looking at the dogs underneath her.

She was a G1 age-restricted finalist back in July and is the outsider of the field.
