Chicken Does The Trick For Eddie

Trainer Eddie Foyle attributed the addition of chicken mince into the diet of Rema's Amethyst for his bitch's stunning return to form at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Rema's Amethyst trailed tearaway leader Unleash Beetson to the home turn but stormed home along the rails to win a 520m fourth and fifth grade in 29.69, fastest time of the meeting.

The 89-year-old Foyle said later: "Rema's Amethyst had been 28.1kg and 28.3kg for her past three unplaced runs and I have been struggling to keep her weight up.

"So after she last raced at Wentworth Park on November 6 I changed her food from all beef mince to include 50 per cent chicken mince and she seems to have thrived.

"She was 29.3kg tonight and was back to her best.

"I walk her around my local park every morning and another trainer pointed out she could be as fit just going on the walking machine.

"But I said 'what about me?' I'm nudging 90 and need the exercise more than Rema's Amethyst does!''

It was a big night for veterans with 81-year-old Dennis Keene and his wife Betty taking out a 520m fifth grade with Smooth White in 30.09.

Not many greyhounds have managed to race as wide at Wentworth Park and still win as Smooth White but the Keene's home-bred dog did just that on Saturday.

After being fourth to the back straight and third turning for home, Smooth White charged home, closer to the outside fence than the rail, to win running away by three lengths.

After the race Denis Keene said: "Smooth White is a fast dog, probably the quickest we have ever trained, but he runs so wide, he gives the other dogs so much start.

"Betty and I bred Smooth White from our bitch Liberty Pearl, who won at Wentworth Park for us in August, 2020, a month before her litter brother Storm Bay had given us our previous city winner before tonight.

"Betty and I are too old to drive to Sydney to race at Wentworth Park, that's why we race our dogs almost exclusively at our local Newcastle track The Gardens.

"I know the long trip knocks me about, it will take me a week to recover from this!

"We would not have bred Smooth White's litter, by Wow from Liberty Pearl, if it had not been for our 17-year-old grand-daughter.

"She is obsessed with greyhound racing and is the only reason Betty and I are still in the sport after 60 years.''

Kiss Me Augie again showed her liking for an outside draw when she scored a narrow win, from box eight, in Saturday's Ladbrokes Quick Multi Max final, 520m.

Going into Saturday's race Kiss Me Augie had posted her fastest Wentworth Park time of 30.01 after jumping from box eight on July 24 and she again made full use of the outside alley for a head win on Saturday.

After the race trainer Amber Capper said: "Kiss Me Augie is a good beginner but when she draws inside she doesn't have the pace to hold her position and usually gets chopped out.

"From an outside box she can sweep around the outside of her opponents, like she did tonight.''

Training honours on Saturday were with Kempsey trainers Nathan and Leeanne Goodwin, who landed the top grade 520m event with Cold Cold Night in 29.81 and a 520m fifth grade with Major Flirt in 29.83.

The Goodwins train both greyhounds for their principal clients, Greg Sprod and Tyronne Whittington.
