Pauline Moran, trainer of brilliant front runner and last start 29.56 Wentworth Park winner Late In Winter, died early Thursday morning, aged 73.
Pauline's death comes just five months after the passing of her husband, former GBOTA racing manager Steve Moran, aged 74.
Total Denial, whose Wentworth Park long-distance record of 42.13 stood unchallenged for six years, was the best greyhound Pauline Moran trained, and while husband Steve was a highly regarded racing administrator, she was virtually born into the sport.
In the 1960s and 70s Pauline's father Alan Land was among NSW's most sought after greyhound chiropractors, and while growing up Pauline saw an endless stream of greyhound owners arriving at her family's Annandale home to have their dogs checked over and their injuries remedied.
It came as no surprise to her family when she took out a trainer's licence as a 17-year-old but after marrying Steve, she moved to the north coast when her husband became president of the Wauchope club.
When Steve became the successful applicant for the post of racing manager of the NSW GBOTA, the Morans returned to Sydney, living at Blacktown.
In 2000 Pauline and Steve moved to Londonderry, from where they prepared a swag of top notch greyhounds.
Among them were Run The Risk, who won 13 of his first 15 races and took out the 2007 group one Peter Mosman Classic, that dog's daughter Wez Da Risk, and Zedman, Zingalong Red, Will Fly Silver and Mr Kenmor.
But Pauline's best was undoubtedly the champion stayer Total Denial, who was switched to long distances after finishing a luckless third in a 520m Peter Mosman Classic final.
Total Denial was an immediate sensation as a stayer, smashing the Sandown 715m record at his first look at the track, and retiring as the winner of 22 from 41 races, including the Brisbane Gold Cup, while also adding the WP 720m track record to his tally .
Total Denial had been born without testicles but Run The Risk, from limited opportunities at stud. sired Wez Da Risk, who reached the finals of a Golden Easter Egg and Ladies Bracelet and who made the pace before finishing second in a Gosford Gold Cup final.
Pauline Moran is survived by her daughter Nicole, son-in-law Ian Wallace, and their daughter, four-year-old Addison Lacey.
Late In Winter and kennelmate Hey Bubba Louie race in heats of the Ultra Sense on Easter Sunday at Wentworth Park.
GRNSW wishes to extend its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the late Pauline Moran.
