Mavis Moran, a successful Hunter Valley trainer and social secretary and long-time member of the NSW GBOTA's Newcastle branch, has died, aged 92.
Mavis Moran, who is survived by her husband Ralph, had been suffering from bone cancer.
She had great success as the trainer of Tommy Power, who won 16 races between 2007 and 2010, and with Izzy Power, a winner of 18 races from 2016 to 2019.
But her biggest win was in the final of a unique Sandown to The Gardens group race when she trained Multicam Girl, who won 10 of 27 starts in 2009 and 2010.
She trained Multicam Girl for Kevin Gordon, a former NSW NCA and GRNSW board member, who also raced the famous "Lochinvar" prefix dogs, prepared by the late Robert Smith.
Mavis Moran also trained Multicam Girl's daughter Multicam Belle, who won four races between 2016 and 2018, for Kevin Gordon.
"I have known Mavis and her husband Ralph for over 20 years and Multicam Girl was the first greyhound she trained for me,'' Gordon said.
"I last time I saw her was six weeks ago and she told me she was doing okay, because she was such a tough, resilient lady.
"It is a very sad day as the industry has lost a truly great woman in Mavis Moran.''
Former leading trainer and greyhound chiropractor Johnny Munro, who was among several of the sport's personalities inducted as a "Living Legend" at The Gardens in 2015, paid tribute to Mavis Moran as a "very good trainer''.
"Mavis used to bring her greyhounds to my place to have them checked for injuries, and I discovered she had a special gift with her dogs, she was remarkable in the way she could educate them in all aspects of their careers,'' Munro said.
GRNSW wishes to extend its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the late Mavis Moran, a true greyhound racing stalwart.
