Power And Glory not only emulated the great She's A Pearl's feat of winning Wentworth Park's two 520m feature races, the Golden Easter Egg and Ladbrokes Million Dollar Chase, but smashed the champion bitch's race record in the MDC final on Saturday night.
She's A Pearl clocked 29.32 winning the 2022 Chase final, but Power And Glory obliterated those figures with a sensational 29.15 seven-length winning romp in this year's $1 million to the winner event.
Trained by Ken Burnett for 79-year-old Jeff Eastburn, Power And Glory began cleanly from box five and after being third at the first turn, swept around the leaders on the back straight and careered away for a hollow win.
Eriza Sparkles, who firmed into favouritism at one stage before being displaced at post time's popular pick by the winner, finished second, with Victoria's Smooth Plane third, one-and-a-half lengths away.
Before the race Ken Burnett declared Power And Glory was suited by his middle box five draw and the son of Hooked On Scotch and Kwong Magic again showed his penchant for sweeping around his opponents.
Power And Glory was bred by Vince Murray, who sold the dog as a puppy to his lifelong friend, Jeff Eastburn.
Power And Glory is the first dog Eastburn has raced in nearly 50 years and was named after the owner's previous greyhound.
Ken Burnett began his training career by winning a heat of the 2003 Wentworth Park Gold Cup, a long-distance event, with Are You Watching, who had been sent out as a $41 outsider.
Are You Watching finished fourth to Bella's Angel in the Cup final but Burnett has been successful with the lead and collar ever since.
Burnett acquired his interest in greyhounds through his role as distribution supervisor at Ingham's Chickens, where a colleague, Charlie Azzopardi, was a dog trainer.
Two others race records were broken on Saturday night's big raceĀ card, with Robert Howard's Zipper On Time setting a new time standard of 29.62 in the $25,000 to the winner Young Star final and Without A Trace, prepared by Victorian trainer Peter Presutto, smashing Super Estrella's race record in the group 2 $40,000 for first Sydney Cup.
Zipper On Time maintained her remarkable flawless WP record, scoring her eighth win in as many starts at headquarters, when she shaved .02sec off Rocket Riot's 2023 Young Star race record.
Super Estrella won the 720m Sydney Cup in 2022 in 41.58, but Without A Trace, runner-up in this year's National Distance Championship, stopped the clock at 41.37 in her all-the-way win in Saturday night's final.
Jodie and Andy Lord had a day to remember at their local track, Goulburn on Friday, when they won an incredible seven races, and they continued that winning streak in Saturday night's $25,000 to the winner MDC Maiden Final.
Their fastest heat winner Texas Bandit, who had made his race debut with a 29.69 heat win, led all the way on Saturday night in 29.92.
The late scratching of noted wide runner Shake It Off, who had drawn box two, looked to have been a bonus for pre-post Master Meteor final favourite Mepunga Smokey, and that proved to be the case with the hotpot leading throughout to score by four lengths.
Aided by a vacant box on his left, Mepunga Smokey began smartly from box three and won in 29.66, just outside the race record of 29.57 set in 2024 by Adhana Rico.
The winner, who is trained in Victoria by Jeff Britton but who has been handled during his Meteor campaign by Sydney trainer Alan Proctor, has now won 25 races and earned $300,000 prizemoney.
Steve Fitch, who had to be content with second placing in the Million Dollar Chase with Eriza Sparkles, took out the MDC Consolation final with Cumbria Jack, who edged out the fast finishing Zig Zag Man in 29.71.
Fitch has now twice been runner-up in the Million Dollar Chase, as his dog Cumbria Kid was beaten a half-length by Jay Is Jay in the 2023 final.
