Vodka And Ice Gets Chance To Turn Tables

Vodka And Ice has finished behind Light Of Mine in each of their past four meetings, but the box draw for Saturday night's top-grade 720m event at Wentworth Park gives him a great chance of finally turning the tables.

In the gapnsw.com.au Stakes, Vodka And Ice has box one and seems assured of a clear run early as Chantane, in box two, is a wide runner.

But Light Of Mine will exit box five and has to cope with the speedy I'm Sally, a winner of eight 720m races at Wentworth Park, drawn on her left in box four.

Vodka And Ice finished second to Light Of Mine from boxes eight, four and three at Gosford and Wentworth Park before finishing sixth, astern of his arch rival second, behind Ayden's Warrior in the Summer Distance Plate at headquarters on January 24.

But while Light Of Mine's fastest Wentworth Park time is 41.99, Vodka And Ice recorded a flying 41.67 in his all-the-way win against weaker opposition at the track on January 29.

Vodka And Ice's trainer Caroline Hughes said: "I wasn't surprised he ran such quick time last week because in trials he has been flying, going quicker than my group race winner Late Night News.

"In his previous few races Vodka And Ice had been getting tangled up early and he had a good draw last week, just as he has again this Saturday night.

"I expect him to go as fast this Saturday as he did at his last start, especially as the greyhound in box two gets wide and Light Of Mine, who makes a left hand turn at the jump, has box five.''

Angelo became eligible for Masters races after turning four last month, but is racing better than ever and is poised to land his 22nd win after drawing box one in Saturday night's Sponsor a Race @ Wenty top grade veterans' event.

Angelo had box seven when caught in the last stride by Secret Bandit at Wentworth Park on January 1, came from second early to win in 30.37 from box eight on January 22, then led throughout from box two to beat prolific Wenty winner Sammy Ethan in 30.01 last Saturday.

Trainer Charlie Gatt said: "Angelo is a good railer so he is ideally drawn on the rails this week.

"My only concern is that even good beginners can sometimes miss the kick from box one at Wenty.

"I was very happy with Angelo's win last Saturday because I thought Sammy Ethan, who had won 19 races at Wentworth Park, would be awfully hard to beat and he managed to win by a couple of lengths.

"Angelo should go close to winning again although I have a healthy respect for Kangaroo Jack, who has box five but will be suited by the small field.

"It all depends how far Kangaroo Jack is from my dog on the back straight because he is very strong.''

El Rey had box two when he won in 29.84 on debut at Wentworth Park on January 22 but trainer Jason Mackay believes the dog has a better draw in Saturday night's One Mitzvah for Bondi 520m fifth grade.

El Rey, who finished fifth from box four at Wentworth Park  on January 29, will exit box seven and Mackay said: "I think he is best suited from middle or wide boxes.

"He had no luck at all last week but from his good draw on Saturday I believe El Rey is capable of going a bit quicker than the 29.84 when clocked late last month.''

Stand-out bet on Saturday should be Magical Ang, who will wear the red rug in the 520m fifth grade Wenty Leagues Stakes.

Magical Ang reeled off a sizzling first split of 5.36 when she led throughout to win a heat of the NSW GBOTA National Futurity in 29.84 on January 24 before coming from behind when second, beaten a head, after drawing box six, in last Saturday night's Wentworth Park final.

Last week Magical Ang trailed Magic Bandit to the home turn and surprised by heading the pacemaker and hitting the front half-way down the straight.

But Magic Bandit came again to edge out Magical Ang, who had gone into the final as fastest heat winner.

On Saturday Magical Ang should relish returning to an inside draw, as she has won five of her seven starts from boxes one, two and three.
