Jay Opetaia, the 22-year-old winner of GRNSW's Young Achiever award in 2023, has a great chance of emulating the feat of Luke Adams, another young trainer, by taking out each of Saturday night's group races at Wentworth Park.
Opetaia (pictured above with Red Rock Razzle) has fastest heat winner Reborn Hostility in box one in the Group 3 Ladies Bracelet and Red Rock Razzle, equal quickest qualifier for the Group 3 Bob Payne Sprint, set to exit box two.
In 2021, Luke Adams, a 26-year-old rookie trainer, landed a Group 1 double at Wentworth Park on the same night when his dog Zipping Moose won the National Derby and his kennelmate Zipping Sapporo scored in the National Futurity.
Reborn Hostility had box four when she came from last to win her heat of the Ladies Bracelet in 29.67 while Red Rock Razzle led until the last couple of strides when second, beaten a nose by Classic Ethics in 29.65, which set the time standard for the Bob Payne heats.
Jay Opetaia said: "Reborn Hostility has the perfect draw on Saturday because she likes punching up along the fence.
"And while she has come from last or near last at her past few starts, she is capable of being more prominent in the early stages, because she has clocked 5.50 to the first mark at Wenty.
"It depends on whether she has enough room to do so."
Hardest for Reborn Hostility to beat could be Elsa Above, who reeled off a flying 5.38 first split en route to her 29.78 Bracelet heat win.
Elsa Above likes to run in the middle of the track so box five should suit her, so long as she can avoid Luke Azzopardi's wide running Gudrid, a reliable beginner, in box four.
Elsa Above's trainer Ricky Brewer said: "On sectional times my bitch only has to step cleanly to be the pacemaker so I am fairly confident.
"She has really thrived since her heat win last Saturday, in fact she has never worked better at home than she has done over the past few days.''
While Reborn Hostility is trainer Jay Opetaia's best hope of group success on Saturday, he also likes the prospects of Red Rock Razzle in the Bob Payne Sprint.
He said: "I used to prefer Red Rock Razzle in boxes five, six or seven but that was when he first started tackling 520m distances.
"Now I'm happy seeing him in box two because if he comes out like he can the draw won't be a worry .
"Late In Winter, who has box six, looks the dog which will rival Red Rock Razzle for the early lead and they met earlier in their careers and brought each other undone by both battling for the front.
In last Saturday's heats, Red Rock Razzle's first sectional was 5.35 while Late In Winter recorded 5.41, but the Nicole Wallace-trained dog has posted a flying 5.33 at Wentworth Park, interestingly from box six, his draw this week.
Hardest for Red Rock Razzle to beat could be Winsome Jet, a luckless third, beaten less than a length, in Late in Winter's 29.66 heat last week.
Winsome Jet came from last when he exited box six in his heat and trainer Minnie Finn is far happier with his box three draw in the Bob Payne final.
"Even after he came out slowly Winsome Jet was unlucky not to just about win last week,'' Finn said.
"He was going fast along the rails leaving the back straight when he was checked off Late In Winter and then ran into the back of Foreign Capital.''
Ashley Dwyer is the third trainer of Zipping Buffalo but the dog landed his first Wentworth Park win with a 29.80 five lengths romp in a gapnsw.com.au heat on April 23 and is capable of taking out Saturday's final.
Zipping Buffalo has box five but Dwyer believes he can win providing he can "hold out" Extreme Machine.
"I think Zipping Buffalo will develop into a real nice race dog,'' Dwyer said.
"He just has to hold out Extreme Machine, who is a quick dog, in box seven, along with Tarawi Banjo, who has box eight, in the run to the first corner.
"Zipping Buffalo is far quicker than his kennelmate Zipping Chicago, but she is in a winnable race in Saturday's Wentworth Park Sports Bar Stakes.
"Zipping Chicago had box six when she won in 30.14 at Wentworth Park last Saturday but is desperate for an inside draw so is ideally positioned in box one on Saturday.
"Earlier in her career she was sitting back in the starting boxes but lately she has been springing forward when the lids lift so with a good getaway she should be able to improve slightly on the 30.14 she clocked last week.''
Best bet on Saturday should be the Todd Barnes-trained Money Keeping, a runaway 29.86 maiden heat winner on April 23 and who is well drawn in box seven as fastest qualifier for Saturday's We Stand With Tasmania final.
