Denham Has Another Staying Star

Allan Denham, son of legendary thoroughbred trainer the late Jack Denham, experienced group race success as a greyhound owner with Donovan Bailey and now races Joanne, another highly promising stayer.

Donovan Bailey broke the race record in winning the 720m Summer Cup at Wentworth Park in 1996 and Joanne, who will exit box two in Thursday night's 720m fourth and fifth grade at headquarters, has the potential to match that dog's success.

Trained by Sam Sultana, Joanne put up a remarkable performance to win at her Wentworth Park 720m debut last Thursday night, winning by over four lengths in a slick 41.92.

Yet Joanne's time would have been far quicker had she not "lost" the turn into the straight the first time around.

Joanne jumped fast from box one but when she reached the next corner, she got so wide she almost reached the 520m starting boxes.

She went from being two lengths in front to be second, two lengths behind Nangar Polly, but recovered gamely to regain the role of pacemaker leaving the back straight.

Joanne has railed well in her string of Wentworth Park 520m wins and so with the benefit of last week's initial 720m test she is unlikely to lose the corner again and should lead all the way.

Erupt has taken time to reach top form after a seasonal spell in February but her second placing behind boom youngster Pound Keeping at Wentworth Park last Thursday indicates she is ready to return to the winning list this week.

Erupt has box six in race three, a heat of the 520m fifth grade series and trainer Craig Chappelow said: "Since coming in season three months ago she has taken a while to hit her peak but she is now starting to come good.

"Her win rate of three from 39 races is not impressive but she has also run some good races among her 18 placings.

"Erupt has always been handy and her second behind Pound Keeping, when she clocked 29.75, her best Wentworth Park time, was her best Wenty performance.''

Mark Gatt, who is enjoying his best year at Wentworth Park, will unveil his new acquisition Row Beau in Thursday night's eighth race, a heat of the 520 fifth grade series.

Row Beau was backed from $12 to $2.50 when he won on debut at Wentworth Park in 29.85 but has not raced since mid February.

"Row Beau has been in my kennels for two months and I am happy with him,'' Gatt said.

Box four though could be a problem for the talented Row Beau as Monsoon Ethics, who has box five, has cut to the rails in recent Bulli and Maitland short course races.

In form Yass trainer Neil Staines has litter siblings Galba Model and Galba Major in Thursday's opening race, a 520m fifth grade, and both greyhounds won for him at Wentworth Park on April 30.

"Galba Major is by far the quicker of my pair but the bitch, Galba Model has an ideal box one draw,'' Staines said.

"However Galba Major, who has box seven, can handle an outside draw, providing he can clear Wax And Wash in the run to the first turn.

"Wax And Wash, who has box six, uses a bit of the track, and was a good second at Wentworth Park last Thursday night.''

Best value bet on Thursday should be the Kayla Jane Coleman trained Eidetic Memory, who has the early pace needed to overcome box four in race two, a heat of the 520m fifth grade series.

Last Thursday at Wentworth Park Eidetic Memory began brilliantly from box eight and posted early splits of 5.41 and a sizzling 13.61 before fading in the straight to finish less than two lengths behind Pound Keeping in 29.66.

Thursday's fifth grade looks an easier assignment for Eidetic Memory who should run her rivals off their legs if she reproduces last week's early sectional figures.
