Ascend Fern, bought by rookie trainer Robert Way for just $4,000, gave him his first Wentworth Park winner when he scorched around the Glebe track on Saturday night in a personal best 29.56.

Ascend Fern had won just one of seven starts with two different Victorian trainers when Way, who has been training for less than two years, purchased the dog.

After his brilliant all-the-way win in a 520m fifth grade on Saturday night, Ascend Fern took his record with his new owner-trainer to 11 wins from 29 starts.

On Saturday Ascend Fern posted brilliant sectional times of 5.39, 13.59 and 17.69 en route to his fastest time of the night performance.

Way, who trains three greyhounds on a small property at Faulconbridge, in the Blue Mountains, said he has received some training advice from fellow Blue Mountains trainer Greg Sutherland, whose bitch Screaming Violet has won 22 races.

"Everyone gave up on her except me and her owner David Smith,'' said trainer Rod Morley after Boppin' Ethics scored her second Wentworth Park win in 19 appearances on Saturday night.

After being fourth on the back straight and third turning for home, Boppin' Ethics flashed along the rails to beat early leaders Fear To Excel and Fascinate Kath by a head in 30.08.

"Boppin' Ethics turned around a few times early in her career and nobody wanted her but her owner David Smith and myself always felt she could win at Wentworth Park and now she has had two wins and four placings there,'' said trainer Rod Morley.

Her trainer would have had a mammoth night on Saturday if Boppin' Ethics' litter sister and kennelmate Maggie's Ethics had been able to win the previous race.

Maggie's Ethics flashed home to finish second, beaten one-and-a-half lengths by Sammy Ethan in a 520m fourth and fifth grade event.

Saturday's win was Sammy Ethan's 24th at Wentworth Park, a remarkable achievement which took the Mark Gatt-trained dog's earnings to over $178,000.

But Rod Morley revealed after Boppin' Ethics' win that he would have collected nearly $47,000 for a $60 all-up bet on his two greyhounds if Maggie's Ethics had been able to win.

Magical Ang and Elsa Above won their 520m fifth grades on Saturday in moderate times of 30.33 and 30.27 respectively but both put up outstanding performances to score.

Magical Ang, a member of the last litter bred by the late rugby league star Terry Hill, led narrowly from box seven but almost had her hind legs pulled from under her at the first turn by a wide runner.

The check pushed Magical Ang back to third at the half-way mark but she railed into second place on the home bend, hit the front in the straight, and hung on to score by a half head.

Magical Ang had been drawn to contest the recent Ausure Ultra Sense series at Wentworth Park but was scratched by trainer Peter Lagogiane.

"Just before the Ultra Sense heats Magical Ang trialled around three-tenths below her best so I pulled her out,'' Lagogiane said.

"I found a little problem with her, got her right again, and in her final trial before tonight she was back to her best.''

Elsa Above jumped well from box eight but was hampered in attempting to get around the speedy Gypsy Grace, who disputed the early lead with her on the first turn.

Elsa Above finally took over and held off Gypsy Grace to score by a half-length.

After the race Elsa Above's trainer Ricky Brewer said: "She did it tough when Gypsy Grace punched up underneath her at the first turn and I was worried my bitch might pull out of it at that point.

"But she stuck to her guns and regained the lead so it was a gutsy win.''

Simplicity Magic, a litter brother to Magical Ang, bolted away with Saturday night's Taree To Wenty Final, scoring by over nine lengths in 29.83 for owner-trainer Todd Dunn.

Training honours for the night were with Boppin' Ethics' owner David Smith, owner and trainer of litter sisters Cha Cha Ethics and Foxtrot Ethics, who were successful in 30.16 and 30.11 respectively.
